An interesting announcement today. Skilljar, a company that allows organizations to offer courses on the Internet, has stated that instructors using their service are now about to accept payments in the form of bitcoin.

Hundreds of instructors are said to use the Skilljar platform to offer customers courses in everything from yoga to coding, right from their own website, according to this morning’s press release.

Instructors have the bitcoin payment feature automatically enabled, Skilljar says, along wiht more traditional means of payments, such as credit cards and PayPal.

“We’re really excited to accept Bitcoin for our Food Startup Branding classes,” says Danielle Gould, founder of Food+Tech Connect — one of the clients using the service. “Because our goal is to decentralize and democratize learning, it’s important for us to align ourselves with innovative technologies that share our ethos. Skilljar’s platform has made it very easy.”

“The decision to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment was simple,” said Sandi Lin, CEO of Skilljar. “It was driven by instructor requests, ease of integration, and the international nature of our business. Since we already use Stripe for payment processing, their beta program with Bitcoin made it easy to integrate, while also leveraging our existing payments infrastructure.”

Skilljar joins the likes of Treehouse, also an education platform in accepting bitcoin payments.

Skilljar was founded in 2013 by three former Amazon employees. Having gone through TechStars Seattle 2013, the company has to date raised $1.1 million in investor funding.
